Alliance Geosynthetics Tests Fiber-Reinforcement Technology

Alliance Geosynthetics, exclusive distributor for FORTA-FI®, has entered into the testing phase for the utilization of fiber-reinforcement technology in patch material. Several projects located in the Midwest will use FORTA-FI for the first time within their cold mix asphalt. Although very similar to conventional Forta products, a special blend with the following features is used in this particular application:

  • Performs at any working temperature.
  • Specially formulated for high percentages of solubles.
  • Can be added to asphalt plant or directly in rejuvenated material on site.

By the Summer of 2014 these test projects will provide additional reassurances to local owners and engineers interested in using fiber-reinforced patch material for pothole repairs, small mill-and-fill projects and small-scale overlays.

Although new to the Midwest, the incorporation of FORTA-FI into cold mix asphalt has gained acceptance in other parts of the country. For example, in Gwinnett County, GA FORTA-FI (PAT blend) has regularly been mixed into the cold mix asphalt by hand when treating potholes in the pavement. The County reported that “their normal thin patches often “pop-out” following significant rain events but by adding FORTA-FI, they simply don’t fail the same way”. FORTA-FI is therefore leading to longer-lasting spot repairs on the County’s roads.
